As a start up online business, driving brand awareness through advertising and marketing is extremely important to us. This summer we partnered with the Blue Boy West Golf Course and Event Center in Sultan Washington to advertise on the 5th tee of the course. This past week, we booked our first tee time to both play the course and introduce ourselves to the owners Ernie and Angie Smith.
First impression: Driving in through the hills above Sultan, the beauty of the surrounding mountains and farmland are absolutely breath taking. Pulling into the drive way, we immediately noticed how well maintained the course, grounds and property all were, showing a true pride of ownership. We arrived at 6:15 am for our 6:45 tee time, and were greeted by Ernie with a big smile, flashing a peace sign at us as he was mowing the putting practice area near the front office. Ernie took time off from his mowing and drove over to say good morning, introduce himself and ask if we needed anything. We have played a number of golf courses all around the US and Europe and can tell you it is very rare to be greeted by the owner of any golf course personally and in such a welcoming manner. Before teeing off, we noticed the great event center amenities as the grounds of the golf course were historically a very successful pig farm in the early 1900’s. We learned from Ernie, that in the 1920’s the farm had a prize winning pig who was constantly winning blue ribbons, and the owner affectionally called Blue Boy. As you can see from the photos on their website, they have a great event center to host wedding, meetings, reunions, or any gathering of people you can think of. The course: Although Blue Boy is a 9 hole course, it plays like some of the more challenging courses in the PNW with dog legs, undulating fairways, water hazards and massive Douglas Fir and Cedar trees that can make your round a challenge. The tee times are timed at every 30 minutes, making it easy to play the course twice for 18. The prices are incredible at $24.00 for 9 holes and only $30.00 for 18.
We played this round with the PGM Professional 3 layer golf balls that we offer in our store and although they didn’t magically help improver our overall score, in a side by side comparison against our Titlist Pro V1, Nike and Kirkland golf balls, we were able to get just as much distance on drives if not further than these quality brands. We ended the day chatting with Ernie in the golf shop who agreed to meet with us later this fall to give us the full back story of history of the Blue Boy golf course. Golf is not for everyone, but for a lot of us, it is yet another form of realizing the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health benefits of simply getting outdoors and being active. We have fallen hard for this hidden gem of a golf course just a few miles off of HWY 2 in Sultan. We look forward to sharing more stories and for a long partnership with Ernie and Blue Boy. Get Outdoors for the Health of it!!!!
